Introduction:

There are many different ways that you can enjoy playing poker. Some of these ways include online, in person with friends or colleagues, at casinos where they have poker tables. Playing poker takes some skill and a little bit of luck. First you need to know the basics rules poker and what you need to look for in your hand. The next section will discuss what types of hands you can have in poker game and which hands are the best and the worst. First something basic you can have one of the below hands and still lose at playing poker if the dealer or other players at the table have a better hand than yours.

The first type of hand you can have is what known as a pair. This is where you have two cards that are the same number or rank. An example of this is two queens or two two’s. The higher the number of the pair you hold in your hands the better the chance of winning the poker hand. This however, does not guarantee even then that you will win as someone else could have the next hand or an even better hand with a flush, royal flush, a run, or four of a kind. These will be discussed in the following sections.

The next better hand in playing poker is what is known as having two pairs. This means that you have two pairs of the same number or rank in your hand. They do not have to all be the same number only two of them and the next pair can be a different number for a pair. The example for this type of poker hand would be two kings and two 3’s or another similar combination. If a person has two pairs they will always beat the player who has a single pair. You will also want to try get your two pairs in the higher ranking cards in order to try not to beat by other players who may have two pairs. This hand is very easy to be beat as it is only the second type of hand you can have if all players have a winning hand at the poker table.

The third type of hand you can have when you are playing poker is a three of a kind. This is where someone has three queens or three of the same number in their hand. This will always beat the previous two types of hands but can still be beat with the following hands described below. This hand can be beat by a straight or a higher three of a kind, a full house, a flush, straight flush or a royal flush.

The fourth type of hand you can have when you are playing poker is what known as a straight. This is where a player has a run of numbers of five cards in a row but not they are all in the same suit. A suit can either be clubs, spades, hearts or diamonds in poker or in any other card game for that matter. This hand in poker can be beat by a higher straight, a flush, full house, four of a kind, a straight flush or a royal flush.

The fifth type of a winning hand when one is playing poker is a flush this is where all your cards that you have in your hand all have the same suit. They do not have to be in a run or pairs or anything else, just in the same suit. This could be all spades for an example or it could be all diamonds. There can be no other card mixed in with the hand of any other suit in order to have this hand. This hand can be beat when you are playing poker by a full house or a higher ranking flush, four of a kind, a straight flush or a royal flush only.

The sixth type of hand that can be a winning poker hand is a full house. This is where you have one three of a kind and another pair in your hand. An example of this is three queens and two 5’s. It does not matter if you have additional cards in your hand that do not match as long as you have the three of a kind and a separate pair. This hand can be beat by the four of a kind, straight flush and royal flush only or another full house with higher ranking cards.

The four of a kind is exactly what it sounds like four cards of the same number or rank. Four queens or four 4’s is a four of a kind. The other cards in your hand do not matter unless you think you can make a higher four of a kind with them or a straight flush or royal flush.

A straight flush is where all the cards in your hand are in the same suit and they run in numerical order with no numbers or ranks missing in between the cards. An example of this is 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 of spades. It can be higher or lower in numerical order only. If the ranking value of your straight flush starts with a 10 and ends with an Ace then you have what is the ultimate winning hand in playing poker known as the royal flush. Nothing can beat this but another royal flush can tie it and no one wins or loses the poker card hand except for the people who do not have this hand at that time.
